What is a Markham SEO company?

Definition
A Markham SEO company is a search engine optimization firm that helps a business in Markham, Ontario appear in Google Search, Google Maps and AI answer tools, by repairing technical problems on its website, publishing content that matches what local customers actually ask, and earning the local trust signals that search engines weigh.

The practical difference from a generic agency is the audience. A Markham business is rarely competing only with the shop down the road. It is competing with Toronto-wide results, with Scarborough and Vaughan businesses that share its borders, and, for many B2B firms, with national vendors. SEO here starts with working out which of those contests is worth fighting.

What we do for Markham businesses

Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Profile categories, service areas, photos, review handling and consistent business details, so Maps shows you for the neighbourhoods you actually serve.

Technical SEO

Crawl and indexing checks, page speed, mobile layout, internal linking and structured data, fixed in order of the traffic each problem is costing you.

Content that answers real questions

Pages written from your customers' questions and your own project or client experience, reviewed by a person, and not produced in bulk.

Backlink building, local relevance, and citations

Listings, partnerships and mentions from genuinely local sources. We do not buy link packages.

AI search visibility

Clear definitions, consistent entity details and well-structured answers that make it easier for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to understand and cite your business. See our AI SEO agency page.

Reporting tied to enquiries

Reports that start from calls, form fills and booked work, with rankings as supporting evidence rather than the headline.

How Markham customers search

By neighbourhood

People search with the name of the area they live in: Unionville, Markham Village, Cornell, Milliken, Angus Glen, Berczy, Cathedraltown or Greensborough. Map results can differ from one neighbourhood to the next, so the pages and Business Profile signals that serve Unionville are not automatically the ones that serve Cornell.

Along the business corridors

Office-based firms around Markham Centre and the Highway 7 corridor are found through a different mix of queries, often service-first and without a city name. For these companies, being named in AI answers about "providers in the Greater Toronto Area" can matter as much as a map ranking.

Across borders and languages

Thornhill is shared with Vaughan, and Markham meets Scarborough at its southern edge, so real search demand ignores city lines. Many households also search in more than one language. When it applies to your customers, we review whether Chinese, Tamil or other language queries are a gap in your coverage.

How Markham residents use ChatGPT and Gemini to choose a company

Someone in Unionville who needs an accountant, a dentist or an SEO company no longer starts only with a search box. More and more, they type the question to ChatGPT or Gemini in plain sentences and receive a short list of named businesses, each with a reason attached. We know of no survey that measures this for Markham specifically, so the figures below are the closest verified Canadian evidence. They come from shopping surveys rather than Markham-specific research, and their limits are stated.

Evidence on AI assistants and business choice
Measure Figure Who and when Source
Canadians using AI in their shopping journey, for research, reviews or deals 45% Canadian consumers, reported January 2026 IBM and NRF consumer study, via Retail Insider
Canadians using AI to research products 42% Canadian consumers, reported January 2026 IBM and NRF study, via Retail Insider
Canadians who trust AI recommendations outright 19% Canadian consumers, reported January 2026 (a further 22% cross-check other sources) IBM and NRF study, via Retail Insider
Canadian shoppers who used an AI tool for shopping in the past 12 months 39% Canadian shoppers, reported September 2026 Salesforce research, via Retail Insider
Canadians who plan to use AI tools, including ChatGPT and Gemini, to guide holiday shopping 78% 1,200 Canadians aged 18 to 85, surveyed November 7 to 14, 2025 KPMG in Canada
Canadian workers who used generative AI at work in the previous 12 months 22% Workers aged 15 to 69, September 2024 to July 2025 Statistics Canada, June 17, 2026
Workplace generative AI use in professional, scientific and technical services 52% Canadian workers, same period Statistics Canada
Workplace generative AI use in finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing 38% Canadian workers, same period Statistics Canada
These are consumer-shopping surveys, mostly about products rather than local services, and none reports results for Markham or Ontario. The IBM and Salesforce figures are as reported by Retail Insider, which did not state sample sizes. The Statistics Canada figures cover employed people and say nothing about how they choose businesses at home.

What this probably means in Markham

Markham's labour force is weighted toward finance, insurance and real estate (13.8%) and professional, scientific and technical services (12.3%), according to the 2016 Census figures in the table above. Those are two of the sectors where Statistics Canada finds the highest use of generative AI at work. A resident who already asks an assistant to draft or summarize at the office is plausibly comfortable asking it to shortlist a company in the evening. That is our inference, not a measured Markham number, and we would rather label it than present it as fact.

The trust figures matter as much as the usage figures. In the IBM and NRF study only 19% of Canadians trusted AI recommendations outright, and a further 22% cross-checked other sources. A reasonable reading is that being named by an assistant starts a check rather than ending one: the person opens your website and your reviews next, and both have to hold up. The studies did not measure that directly.

The kind of question Markham residents ask on ChatGPT

These are illustrative examples of how requests tend to be phrased, not quotations from real users:

  • Who is a reliable roofer in Unionville that works on older homes?
  • Which accounting firms in Markham work with small software companies?
  • Compare SEO companies near Highway 7 and tell me what each is good at.

Notice what these share. They include a place, a specific situation and a request to compare. A page that only says "quality service in the GTA" does not answer any of them.

How the shortlist gets built

Each assistant assembles its answer from different sources, and those sources change as the products are updated, so nobody outside those companies can promise how a given business will be chosen. What we can control is whether your details agree everywhere they appear and whether your pages answer the question being asked.

What we do so your business can be on that list

This is the core of our AI SEO work. If you are weighing paid placement inside the assistants, see our ChatGPT ads service, and read our AI SEO case study for how we document results. For the wider mix of SEO, ads and web design in Markham, see our internet marketing company page.

The Markham market we are optimizing for

Markham is the most populous of York Region's nine municipalities, and its labour force is weighted toward finance, insurance, real estate and professional and technical services. These figures come from City of Markham materials and reporting on a City staff report. Several date from 2016 to 2018 because the City has not published newer equivalents we could verify, and each row says so.

What these numbers mean for search

A city with 184,750 jobs and several hundred technology and computer-services firms produces a lot of business-to-business searching: office managers comparing vendors, IT leads shortlisting software, finance teams looking for accountants. That research is slow, happens on desktop during work hours, and increasingly starts with an AI assistant. Retail trade, at 11.3% of the labour force, and a population above 360,000 produce the opposite pattern: fast, mobile, map-driven searches with a neighbourhood name in them.

One SEO plan rarely serves both. We decide at the start which pattern your customers follow, and spend your budget there.

Questions about hiring a Markham SEO company

What does a Markham SEO company actually do?

It audits and improves how your business appears in Google Search, Google Maps and AI answers: technical fixes on your website, content that matches customer questions, Google Business Profile management and local trust signals, with reporting tied to enquiries.

How long does SEO take to work in Markham?

Technical fixes and Business Profile improvements can show effects within weeks, but meaningful ranking gains usually take months and depend on competition, your site's history and how much content needs to be built. We will give a realistic expectation after the audit rather than a fixed date.

Do I need an office in Markham to rank there?

For Google Maps, a verified address in or near the area helps. For regular search results, service-area businesses can rank with strong, specific pages and consistent signals. We check which route fits your situation before recommending a plan.

Can SEO get my business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity?

It can help those tools identify your business and draw on it in an answer, through clear definitions, consistent business details and well-structured pages. No agency can guarantee a recommendation, and we do not claim to.

Should I choose SEO or Google Ads?

Ads reach people ready to buy now and stop when the budget stops. SEO builds visibility that compounds but takes longer to start. Plenty of Markham businesses run both. Which one leads depends on how quickly you need enquiries and how crowded your market is.

How much does a Markham SEO company charge?

Pricing depends on the size of your site, how competitive your searches are and which services you need. We quote after the audit, so you see what the work involves before you decide. LeadGulls generally charges $2500 a month.
